Frederick Henry Henshaw - The Ladder Bridge, Weeping Cross, Staffordshire

This painting of a rickety, old bridge is an interesting example of the use of perspective. Its broadest part appears closest to us, as though we could step onto it and walk across to the other side where it narrows. Bridges were used by artists to symbolise the transition from life to death. Weeping Cross in Staffordshire has its name because there is an old tree there, which was used for hanging people.
